The Ladder - Devina Harminto

Tears traveled down
south from her cheeks
She looked down, then looked at me
in the eyes and said three words,

I am depressed,

Her eyes exclaimed in pain
Emptiness and numbness radiated through
her wet, puffy cheeks

What happened to her?

I was there
able to listen to her
Gave her words of wisdom
Making sure she felt heard and listened to

When the line of certain emotions become chaotic,
Emotional instability becomes apparent
Where it can create an abundance of emotions
Uncontrollable with every second that passes

Some may say that:
Being too nice comes with a price
Being understanding can be exhausting
Being open-minded will get you winded

That you will be used
As a cushion for the comfort of others

Maybe that cushion has the power to save
someone’s life?

A life that feels as if they’re trapped
600 feet underground,
Unable to climb up to see the light

Maybe I can be a ladder for someone to climb on
A ladder that allows itself to be a shoulder to cry on,
but won’t get broken along the way and become
The person they can rely on
